Ales Hemsky is a tough player, on and off the ice.
After going through hip surgery last October and only being on the ice for 15 games, the former Dallas Stars player is ready to recover and start a new season with the Montreal Canadiens.
Hemsky will be a great addition to the Habs team. Despite him turning 34-years old today (August 13), he’s proven that he’s a solid veteran. He also has proven to be able to bounce back from medical setbacks.
When Hemsky had his first major surgery back in April 2015, he was able to bounce back fairly quickly. In the following year he put up 13 goals and 39 points in 75 games, according the Official Montreal Canadiens website.
I will admit I never heard of Hemsky before learning about his one-year, $1 million contract with the Habs earlier in July. This was when I had begun to question Andrei Markov‘s future (no I will not get over Markov leaving) and didn’t bother to research players like Hemsky.
In a way Hemsky could be the replacement Markov. It’s definitely a stretch to say that, and Markov won’t be replaced, but Hemsky could fill that void temporarily. It will be interesting to see what Hemsky has to offer for the Habs once he steps out on the ice. Having a connection with Jamie Benn is a bonus, but will he click with the rest of the team?
There’s two months left before the season begins. With plenty of time for Hemsky to recover in Dallas and bond with Benn before moving up the Montreal, there are still lots of questions. Nobody can answer them until we see him in action.
